Functional Electronic Stimulation

Functional Electronic Stimulation (FES) is a method of applying low level electrical currents to improve and/or restore lost body functions such as being able to walk using natural movements. Other types of FES systems improve lost abilities like grasping. A non-orthotic example of an FES device would be a heart pacemaker.

FES Systems at Green Prosthetics & Orthotics

At Green Prosthetics & Orthotics we offer a number of FES systems to improve selected capabilities that are controlled by an individual’s central nervous system. An example of the type of condition where we utilize an FES system is Foot Drop. Foot Drop results from an injury or illness that makes the foot and ankle muscles either weak or paralyzed. Often times this is a result of a stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, or cerebral palsy. By applying FES technology we can offer people with Foot Drop the ability to walk more naturally, increase or maintain their range of motion, as well as increase their overall speed and stability. See our NESS – L300 Foot Drop System in the Technology Section of our website.
